How Age Calculation Actually Works
Age in years, months, and days isn't a simple subtraction of dates. It's a calendar algorithm with three rules:
- Start from the smallest unit. Subtract days first. If today's day-of-month is smaller than the birth day-of-month, borrow one month (using the previous month's days).
- Then months. If today's month is smaller than the birth month, borrow one year by adding 12.
- Then years. What's left is your age in whole years.
That's why a person born on March 31 is not one month old on April 30 — there is no April 31, so the calculator rolls to May 1. Different calculators handle this "end-of-month" case differently, and that's where results diverge.
Leap years complicate things further. A year isn't 365 days — it's 365.2422. We add February 29 every four years (with the century exception: 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not). Any tool that assumes 365 days per year drifts a full day off every four years.
