What We Tested
12 QR code generators. Same test QR code (WiFi credentials + a vCard) on each. Scored on five dimensions, 0-5 each:
- Customization: Can you change colors, add a logo, adjust error correction, control the output size?
- Export quality: Is the PNG actually usable at print resolution? Does SVG export work correctly?
- Dynamic QR support: Can you edit the destination after printing? Does tracking work?
- Privacy: Does the generator upload your data to a server, or process locally?
- Price: What do you actually get for free? How aggressive are the upsells?

Best For Different Needs
Best Free Static QR: QR Code Monkey
Maximum customization, no account needed, processes locally. The gold standard for free static QR codes. Generate a high-res PNG with your logo, custom colors, and proper error correction. Export at 1000ร1000 pixels. The downside: no dynamic QR support, so if you change the destination URL, you're reprinting.
Best For Business (Dynamic QR): Beaconstac
If you're printing QR codes on 5,000 product packages or a billboard, you need dynamic QR codes. Beaconstac's dashboard lets you change the destination URL anytime, tracks scan analytics (location, device, time), and supports bulk generation. The $15/month is worth it for production use. Enterprise plans include SSO and API access.
Best For Privacy + Quick Tasks: iluv.tools
Our QR code generator suite has 10 specialized generators (WiFi, vCard, WhatsApp, SEPA, UPI, Crypto, Event, Location, Bulk, Google Review). Everything runs in your browser โ the QR code is generated locally, never uploaded. Good customization (colors, logo, size). Output at any resolution. No dynamic QR support โ this is for static use cases where privacy matters (like encoding your WiFi password or personal contact info).
What to Avoid
- "Free" generators that email you the QR code. They're harvesting email addresses. If a generator requires your email to deliver a QR code, close the tab
- Generators that redirect through their own URL by default. Some "free" QR generators encode a tracking redirect instead of your actual URL. The QR code works, but the generator can change it later, track your scans, or insert ads. Always test a generated QR code by scanning it and checking what URL it resolves to
- Watermarked QR codes. Some generators add their logo inside the QR code without telling you. This increases scan failure rates by reducing error correction headroom
