- Metric vs. imperial assumptions. A "ton" in the US is 2,000 pounds (short ton), in the UK it's 2,240 pounds (long ton), and a metric tonne is 2,205 pounds. Always confirm which one your source means.
- Squaring the wrong value. Converting an area requires the square of the linear factor. 1 m² = 10.76 ft², not 3.28 ft².
- Decimal vs. comma. In many countries "1.5" and "1,5" both mean one-and-a-half. Paste values carefully when copying from international sources.
- Unit symbols. MB (megabyte) vs. Mb (megabit) vs. MiB (mebibyte) all mean different things. When a conversion matters for billing or storage, verify which unit is meant.
The fix for all of these is the same: run the number through a converter and sanity-check the magnitude. If your kitchen conversion says a cup of flour weighs 4,000 grams, something is wrong — a cup of flour is roughly 120 grams.
